Review of Popular Messaging Apps

1. Snapchat - This app is risky. Many teens use it for fun and to send pictures and videos that disappear after seconds. However, the pictures don’t actually disappear. These pictures and videos are out there forever because whatever is online, stays online and can be recovered. Students may send pictures that end up getting spread and shared with many people. This will embarass the student and possibly even ruin the student’s reputation.

2.
Burn Note - This texting app makes messages self destruct after 30 days. The app claims that nothing can be recovered and texts are difficult to screenshot using this app. Students may take advantage of this and send bold, daring texts because they know they won’t be there forever.

3.
Whisper - This app can be incredibly dangerous for students. People can post their thoughts at any moment anonymously. This leads to people, including students, posting inappropriate content. The information can even go public, as other social media sites such as Buzzfeed, feature things from this app. Ever heard the phrase, “Garbage in, garbage out” ? That’s exactly what this app demonstrates.

4.
Secret - Speak Freely - This app is just like Whisper. People can say things anonymously. However, it does request your email address and phone number to use the app. Students can be exposed to inappropriate content and bad language on this app. It makes it easy for people to slander others which is harmful for students.

5.
Ask.fm - This website enables people to ask random, anonymous questions to others. Some things asked on this app are harmless, but other things are more sexual, crude, and inappropriate. This app has also opened the door to cyberbullying which is very harmful to the student. This app can cause emotional stress for students.

6.
Omegle - This app enables anonymous chatting in chat rooms. You get paired up with a stranger and you can discuss anything you would like. This is not a good app for students because many people that use this app are looking for sexual relationships. This is a very inappropriate app and should not be used by any student ever.

Zooburst Assignment

This is an assignment that I created for a Social Studies class. Students
must create a Zooburst pop-up book about any person of their choice from
the Civil Rights time period. Students must provide at least 5 facts about their
chosen person. Pictures should support the facts. Sources should be listed at
the end of the pop-up book.

Life Cycles Youtube Video

Gliffy Review

Gliffy is a website where you can create online diagrams. You can make
and share flowcharts, floor plans, network diagrams, and many other
designs all online. This website is a great tool for creating diagrams. This
could be useful to teachers in the classroom. Teachers can create diagrams
that go along with their lessons or even instruct students on how to create
diagrams for their own use. It is slightly complicated to use, but Gliffy walks you
through everything.

Worldwide Museum of Natural History Review

Worldwide Museum of Natural History

This website is good for finding brief information and pictures of vertebrate life, invertebrate life, planetary science, astronomy, gems, and minerals. I think it would be great for a science class. It doesn't go into too much detail, but it is enough information to classify and know the the characteristics of the different things listed.

Easy Define Review

Here is my review for Easy Define :

Easy Define is a website that spits out definitions. You can type
any word(s) in the box and it will provide you with a complete definition(s).
You can then download the list of definitions as a Word document or send it
as an email. You can also press 'Quick Define' and it will give you a short, brief
definition for the word(s). On this website you also have the option to look at
synonyms for the word(s), quiz yourself on the word(s), or even make flashcards.
This website is a great tool for expanding vocabulary and learning new terms!

"Cannonball" Lea Michele Review

Common Sense Media reviewed Lea Michele's single, "Cannonball."
Here is what they said:

Lea Michele stars on the hit show Glee. "Cannonball" is her first solo single.
According to Common Sense Media,  this single is a "squeaky-clean track
about overcoming hardship" and it "has no iffy content." The site also recommends
that the age of 7 is appropriate to begin listening to this single. This song
provides positive messages and role models as well. It was given 3 stars
for quality.

Prezi Review

EdShelf provided this resource on their website. This is
my own review of the site.

Prezi is a tool that enables you to create presentations and
take them to a whole new level. You are given a zoomable canvas to create
|and add whatever you like in order to draw your audience in through
your presentation. This presentation tool is captivating and helps keep your
audience's attention. Prezi has templates available if you need help getting
started with your presentation. These Prezi presentations are easy to follow
and help your audience to remember the content. Recently, I sat through a church
service where Prezi was used. The presentation had a globe on it and for each
individual point that the speaker made, the presentation would zoom in to a
different part of the world. It was a great message and Prezi added so much to it!
Prezi is available for iPads, Macs, Windows, and on the Internet as well. It is free for
general features, but you can also upgrade for a small cost if you would like.

IXL Math Practice Review

Free Tech for Teachers found this resource, IXL Math Practice.
This is my own review of the website.

IXL Math Practice

This website is great for those in grades Pre-K through 8th grade.
It also offers math practice for those in high school who may be taking Algebra I
or II and Geometry. There is a list of skills and standards for each grade level
that students are expected to know. Students can click on any one skill and begin
practicing. The website will prompt different questions and offers multiple choice
for students to choose from. After the student answers the question, the website
will then tell whether they got the answer correct or not. If given the wrong answer, the
website will show the correct answer and also provide a tutorial to reteach and review
the specific skill. This website also provides the same practice in  Language Arts for 2nd grade
through fifth grade. I would definitely recommend this site to any student in any of
the grade levels listed. It is a great practice!

LyricsNMusic Review

Larry Ferlazzo reviewed LyricsNMusic on his
"Best of Art & Music Sites of 2011."
This website was listed as number three on his list.
This is my own review of this website.

LyricsNMusic

This website is great for anyone and everyone that loves music. Have you ever heard a song on the radio but you had no idea what it was called? This website is perfect for that type of situation. You can search different lyrics and the song will come up with complete lyrics and a music video. The lyrics will appear at the top and the video will appear at the bottom, so you can sing along if you would like!
