Technology Autobiography

Technology is something that is constantly evolving and changing in today’s society. Throughout most of my education in elementary, middle, and high school, technology was fairly the same in the classroom. When I was in first grade, I remember having a couple of computers in the classroom, however there were also a few typewriters that were actually used more frequently than the computers. I remember always having at least one day during the week in each grade where my class went to a computer lab. Computers were something that remained fairly constant. There were always at least two or three in the classroom in addition to having a computer lab for students to use. When I was a senior in high school, my English teacher brought in laptops that belonged to the school every now and then in order for us to do research. I remember being quite surprised that the school had laptops for the students to use instead of having to sit at a desktop in a computer lab.
Overhead projectors were huge in schools when I was growing up. Every teacher had one in their classroom and used them multiple times daily. When I was a senior in high school, the school purchased Smartboards for some of the classrooms. Some teachers chose not to use them because this would mean changing their ways and learning new technology but some teachers embraced this new way. My English teacher used his Smartboard every single day; he was quite a fan. He showed movies, Youtube videos, Powerpoint presentations, and so much more using the Smartboard.
In my practicum experiences here at EC, I have been impressed by the technology used in the elementary school classrooms. Compared to what teachers had when I was in school, the technology used is incredible. Every teacher has a Smartboard in his or her classroom. Teachers make use of these Smartboards for almost every single activity. They help make lessons more interactive as students are able to come up to the Smartboard and click and write things themselves. There are also Elmos in every classroom. Elmos work very similar to an overhead projector, however they are smaller and much more tech savvy. They work together with the computer and Smartboard in the classroom. I used an Elmo with the Smartboard for a couple of my lessons in my kindergarten classroom. There are also Ipads in every classroom for students to use during centers, along with an Ipad cart that teachers can reserve for classwide activities. I was impressed in high school with laptops for every student; you can imagine my excitement when a class full of kindergartners were each given an Ipad to work with. Technology has come and incredibly long way and will continue to do so.
